July, 2006
CAOS Members,
2006 is an exciting year for us, signifying our 20th year of service to the Chinese Ophthalmology community. With this significant occasion, this years Annual banquet will be a gala event, and like last year, Inspire Pharmaceuticals has graciously offered to sponsor the event. Because of limited seating and expense, this year we will require reservations. Members and their spouses in good standing (dues up to date) will have their admission waived and others will be charged $100 per person for this special event. It will be held at the Venetian Resort, and plans are underway to make it a very memorable night. Because of the joint meeting with APAO we anticipate participants from many of the east Asian countries.
Also to celebrate this momentous occasion we are developing a 20th Anniversary yearbook to commemorate this event. This will chronicle our organization's history and current and future Chinese ophthalmologist working to make a difference. If you have articles, photos, ideas, please do not hesitate to contact us.
This year's Distinguished guests are:
Pioneer Research Award: Dr. Alan Chow, pioneer of the retinal chip
Keynote Speaker: Dr. David Chang, distinguished phacoemulsification surgeon
Guest of Honor: Dr. Peter McDonnell, Chairman of Wilmer Eye Institute, Johns Hopkins University Dept of Ophthalmology.
Seating is limited, first come first served. Registration is available on the web for members in good standing and/or by mail. If you have forgotten to pay your 2006 dues please do so immediately or you will be charged admittance.
Our Resident/Fellow Research Award is still taking applications, and the deadline has been extended to September 1st, 2006. If you know of someone who is qualified, please direct them to our website for more information on eligibility and requirements for our $3000.00 Research Award. (www.caosmd.com )

The annual Banquet meeting on October 16th, 2005 in Chicago was a great
success. We had more than 140 attendees from all around the world.
Congratulations to Dr.
Stanley Chang for receiving this year's Pioneer
Research Award, and thank you to Dr.
Paul Lee for an insightful Key
Note Speech. We look forward to your continued participation at next
year's meeting on November
12th, 2006 in Las Vegas.
Your support of our society is appreciated and we welcome input from
all our members. If you have a worthy cause or suggestions for our
organization, please don't hesitate to let me know by phone or email.
It is my pleasure to inform you that by unanimous vote during our board
meeting in Chicago that Dr.
Roy Chuck was voted to be the president of
CAOS
for 2007-2008.
We are currently trying to develop a year book for our organization
spanning our 20 year history. Tentatively we are trying to collect
achievements, articles, comments, photographs from our members, if you
would like to participate, please contact Dr. Helen Li at hli@utmb.edu.
We would also like to especially thank Inspire for sponsoring our
Chicago event, and also to Alcon, Medpoint, and Pfizer for their
generous grants. If you see a representative of one of these companies
in your office, please give them our thanks!
Finally, 2005 is nearly coming to a close and the majority of
my goals for this year have been fulfilled. We have more work
to be done like developing our research paper award and promoting
continued education. Stay tuned to this web site for more information

CAOS Members
It is with great pleasure that I introduce
myself to you as the new president of the Chinese American
Ophthalmological Society for 2005. I hope you and your family have
enjoyed a joyous holiday and I also wish you a happy and prosperous
Chinese New Year, the year of the Rooster.
As you may know, this organization was established 18 years ago during
an Academy meeting in New Orleans. With the tireless efforts of past
presidents, cabinet and committee members, we remain true to our
mission statement of advancing medical knowledge and scientific
research in ophthalmology and in assisting in the education and
training of ophthalmologists of Chinese descent.
A recent survey in 2004 conducted by EyeNet estimated that 10% of AAO
members and 26% of residents and fellows in training were Asian. The
most recent AAO roster showed approximately 700 ophthalmologists with
Chinese surnames.
Our first goal in the start of the new year is an exhaustive membership
drive. We encourage you and fellow Chinese ophthalmologists to join and
participate. We are in the process of developing ways to help residents
and members to network in finding job opportunities and mentorship.
Another ambitious project we have is to fund scientific and clinical
research, at both student and professional levels, that focus on ethnic
eye disorders. One of our final goals is to continue and develop
internatinal relations with our counterparts in other parts of the
world.
Membership
is $50 per year for practicing physicians and $25 for residents and
fellows in training.
Sincerely,
Ted Chau-Po Wei, M.D., Ph.D.
